NOT A DRAWING — A DESIGN THAT LIVES WITH A BODY

I am Emre Can Duman. I work in Antalya, in black and grey realism. My path started with drawing and anatomy, and led me to a degree in Graphic Design from the Faculty of Fine Arts. After years as an art director in media agencies, I moved into professional tattooing six years ago, combining design discipline with artistic depth to make custom pieces.

HOWIN MY
STORYI
WORKTATTOO

A tattoo is not a drawing placed on skin; it is a design that has to live with a body. Skin moves, ages and changes. That is why I build the composition on the arm as it bends and straightens, not on paper. In black and grey realism what holds a piece together is not detail but a correctly built tonal range: the lightest and darkest values are planned from the start so the work still reads years later. Outside the studio I contributed as an illustrator to the 2017 ethnographic study “Vanishing Traces: Traditional Tattoos in Southeast Anatolia”, documenting the ancient 'dek' and 'dak' motifs of southeastern Turkey.

Focus

Black & Grey Freehand

Solid black, heavy contrast, no half measures. Black & Grey Freehand is where I am most at home: bold shapes that hold their weight from a distance and stay readable as the skin ages. I build these pieces around the body's own lines, letting negative space do as much work as the ink.

Portrait

Likeness rests on a few critical edges — eye spacing, the tip of the nose, the corners of the mouth — not on detail. Get those right and the rest follows.

Freehand

Portraits, animals, objects — rendered in soft grey wash or full black and grey. Freehand is the slowest work I do and usually the most rewarding: it is built in sessions, layer over layer, until the depth reads correctly from both near and far.

Sleeve Projects

Work spread across several sessions that gathers the whole arm into one composition. Parts are planned for the flow of the whole, not one by one.

Large Scale

Symmetry, repetition and precise spacing. Large Scale work is measured before it is drawn: I map the piece to the body's axis so the pattern stays true when the arm bends. Clean, structural, and unforgiving of a shaky line.

Mythology & Sculpture

Shading built entirely from dots. Mythology & Sculpture trades speed for texture — a soft, almost printed gradient that no other technique gives you. It pairs well with geometric and blackwork pieces, and it rewards patience on both sides of the machine.

Animal Portrait

On short-haired breeds there is nowhere to hide a mistake. On black fur, volume can only be described with reflected light.

Freehand

For work that wraps and has to follow the surface, the pattern is resolved directly on the skin rather than on paper.
